{"id":140013,"date":"2024-01-12T00:08:47","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T05:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=140013"},"modified":"2024-01-11T23:20:38","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T04:20:38","slug":"vanderbilt-has-1-administrator-for-every-2-students-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/vanderbilt-has-1-administrator-for-every-2-students-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanderbilt has 1 administrator for every 2 students: analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>ANALYSIS: DEI commitment includes a recent $17 million faculty initiative, \u2018identity centers,\u2019 and more<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Vanderbilt University employs more than one full-time administrator for every two students, a <em>College Fix<\/em> analysis found.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2021-22 academic year, the most recent for which data are available, the private Nashville university <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/18bRws7oDbYSwSiKl83JgeCtpXgXXzfOT-Qx6evu08Zs\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employed<\/a> 3,516 full-time administrators and support staff, according to information the school filed with the federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System.<\/p>\n<p>Administrators and support staff include management, student and academic affairs divisions, IT, public relations, administrative support, maintenance, legal, and other non-academic departments.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Vanderbilt\u2019s reported full-time undergraduate student enrollment was 6,983. That amounts to 517 full-time administrators and support staff per 1,000 undergrads, or more than one for every two students.<\/p>\n<p>Vanderbilt employed 1,149 teaching and instructional staff in 2021-22, meaning it offered 164 educators for every 1000 students.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Glenn Reynolds, who teaches law at the University of Tennessee, weighed in on the numbers in an email to<em> The Fix.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo school should have that many administrators,\u201d he wrote. \u201cSince universities are nonprofits, they don&#8217;t pay dividends to shareholders. Instead, they tend to plow \u2018profits\u2019 into staff and buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bloated staff has been a major cause of skyrocketing tuition and student debt,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> emailed Vanderbilt media relations twice over the past week and left a voicemail with its strategic communications department on Jan. 5, asking why the ratio of administrators to students was so high and what value administrators offer to students and faculty. No response has been received.<\/p>\n<p>Justin Owen, the president and chief executive officer of the Beacon Center of Tennessee, a non-profit free market think tank, told <em>The Fix<\/em> in an email that \u201cthere is an ongoing trend to spend more on administrators and less on teaching students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColleges shouldn&#8217;t be wasting money on highly paid administrators whose jobs have little to nothing to do with whether a student will get a good education and a good job upon graduating,\u201d Owen said.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/northwestern-employs-1-administrator-for-every-2-undergrads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determined<\/a> last month that Northwestern University also employs more than one administrator for every two undergraduates, including several new DEI staff in its sports program.<\/p>\n<p>Even more, an analysis conducted by<em> The Fix<\/em> in December on Youngstown State University in Ohio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/as-youngstown-state-student-enrollment-dropped-admin-student-ratio-tuition-increased\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that the ratio of administrators to students grew more than 13 percent over the past four years, even as full-time undergraduate enrollment fell almost 16 percent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/billionaire-confirms-harvard-president-was-dei-hire-as-dozens-more-plagiarism-accusations-emerge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Billionaire confirms Harvard president was DEI hire<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In its hiring, funding and self-promotion, Vanderbilt shows a strong commitment to DEI principles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) is woven into the very fabric of our work, our community, and our mission,\u201d its <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/about\/diversity-inclusion.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> states.<\/p>\n<p>In July, <em>The Fix<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/vanderbilt-launches-17-million-dollar-faculty-dei-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that Vanderbilt had launched a $17 million faculty DEI initiative to advance diversity.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative, funded in part by the National Institutes of Health, aims to \u201caccelerate diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the biomedical research community,\u201d according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vumc.org\/2023\/06\/21\/vanderbilt-launches-17-million-program-to-advance-diversity-of-research-faculty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement<\/a> from the<em> VUMC Reporter,<\/em> the in-house publication of the medical school\u2019s media team.<\/p>\n<p>Vanderbilt\u2019s \u201cEquity, Diversity and Inclusion\u201d staff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/diversity\/equity-diversity-and-inclusion-full-staff-listing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> lists four \u201cidentity centers,&#8221;
