{"id":140299,"date":"2024-01-10T18:01:37","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T23:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=140299"},"modified":"2024-01-10T18:08:38","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T23:08:38","slug":"former-stanford-president-retracts-groundbreaking-alzheimers-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/former-stanford-president-retracts-groundbreaking-alzheimers-paper\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Stanford president retracts &#8216;groundbreaking&#8217; Alzheimer&#8217;s paper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Retraction is his fourth in four months<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Former Stanford University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, who resigned in July of last year after an investigation found flaws in his research, retracted a 2009 science paper formerly described as &#8220;groundbreaking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious science journal<em> Nature <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06943-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the retraction in a December 18 article signed by Tessier-Lavigne (<em>pictured<\/em>), the lead author, and his three co-authors,<em> The Stanford Daily<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/stanforddaily.com\/2023\/12\/31\/blockbuster-alzheimers-paper-retracted-by-former-stanford-president-after-a-decade-of-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Tessier-Lavigne, a neuroscientist, was an executive at the biotechnology company Genentech, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/stanforddaily.com\/2023\/02\/17\/internal-review-found-falsified-data-in-stanford-presidents-alzheimers-research-colleagues-allege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Daily<\/em><\/a>. Two days after the paper&#8217;s publication, Genentech described it to its shareholders as \u201cgroundbreaking basic research about an entirely new way of looking at the cause of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A <em>Nature<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/459310a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> published about the paper shortly after was titled, &#8220;Alzheimer&#8217;s theory makes a splash.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tessier-Lavigne told <em>The Daily, &#8220;<\/em>As with all of my papers, at the time of publication of<em> Nature<\/em> 2009, I believed the results in the paper were correct and accurately presented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI absolutely believe that there are no falsified data in the paper,\u201d he told <em>The Daily<\/em> in a subsequent email, it reported.<\/p>\n<p>The retraction is Tessier-Lavigne&#8217;s fourth in four months, according to <em>The Daily.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Such incidents are rare, as just eight out of every 10,000 science papers are retracted, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2022\/12\/27\/nearing-5000-retractions-a-review-of-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Retraction Watch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily<\/em> reported that &#8220;two of Tessier-Lavigne\u2019s influential neurodevelopment papers published in <em>Science<\/em> and a third published in<em> Cell<\/em> were withdrawn earlier this fall after they were found to contain manipulated images.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Another Tessier-Lavigne paper published in <em>Nature<\/em> was issued an expression of concern over &#8216;manipulation of research data&#8217;
