{"id":28268,"date":"2016-07-26T14:22:49","date_gmt":"2016-07-26T18:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=28268"},"modified":"2016-07-26T14:43:07","modified_gmt":"2016-07-26T18:43:07","slug":"common-core-pushing-morality-discussions-classroom-teacher-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/common-core-pushing-morality-discussions-classroom-teacher-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Core is pushing morality discussions out of the classroom, teacher claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kentucky teacher Paul Barnwell has a class full of students who wouldn&#8217;t turn in their boyfriend or girlfriend for committing a felony that &#8220;badly\u00a0harmed&#8221; other people.<\/p>\n<p>Their responses to this hypothetical scenario &#8220;troubled me,&#8221; Barnwell writes in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2016\/07\/students-broken-moral-compasses\/492866\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Atlantic<\/em><\/a>, and he has a theory on what helped make them\u00a0so morally callous: Common Core.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDo you think you should discuss morality and ethics more often in school?\u201d I asked the class. The vast majority of heads nodded in agreement. Engaging in this type of discourse, it seemed, was a mostly foreign concept for the kids. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As my students seemed to crave more meaningful discussions and instruction relating to character, morality, and ethics, it struck me how invisible these issues have become in many schools.
