Lecture to address \u2018resurgence of white supremacy\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A lecture scheduled for next month at Columbia College in Chicago will examine the topic of \u201cwhiteness in decline\u201d and look at how whites\u2019 current social position has led to a \u201cresurgence of white supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lecture<\/a>, titled \u201cWhiteness in Decline: The Emotional Politics of White Nationalist Resurgence,\u201d will take place April 12 and include a presentation from professor Paula Ioanide of Ithaca College in New York.<\/p>\n

Ioanide\u2019s remarks will touch on the \u201cimagined and real losses in entitlements white Americans have come to expect and the ways these connect to the resurgence of white nationalism,\u201d according to an online description of the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cIoanide argues that the reactionary emotional politics of white nationalism indicate both the precarious structure of white domination and the effectiveness of racial justice movements,\u201d a flyer for the event states.<\/p>\n

Ioanide, a professor of comparative race and ethnicity studies, did not respond to The College Fix<\/em>\u2019s request for comment regarding her upcoming talk.<\/p>\n

The April 12 event is included in a six-part campus lecture series titled \u201cCritical Issues in Cultural Studies: The ‘Forgotten Man’ in the Trump Era.\u201d Other lectures in the series, which runs until May, focus on topics such as \u201cfeminist ecology\u201d and the alt-right\u2019s use of social media.<\/p>\n

A Feb. 22 event<\/a> that was part of the lecture series included a Vanderbilt University history professor visiting Columbia College and speaking about \u201cthe recurring trope of the \u2018forgotten man\u2019 in American politics from social Darwinist William Graham Sumner to Franklin Roosevelt to Donald J. Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

On March 29, Columbia College professor Michelle Yates will present<\/a> an \u201cecofeminist reading of Hollywood’s climate fiction film\u201d as part of the lecture series. Yates\u2019s presentation will examine the films \u201cSoylent Green\u201d and \u201cInterstellar\u201d and discuss how they \u201cutilize climate change as a recuperative strategy for the re-privileging of hegemonic white masculinity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another gathering<\/a> in the series scheduled for late April will feature University of Illinois at Chicago professor Adrienne Massanari speaking about the alt-right\u2019s use of the website Reddit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technolibertarian ideals of Reddit and its culture of anti-feminism, trolling, and ambivalent humor are reflected in the site\u2019s most prominent ‘alt-right’ spaces,\u201d the event\u2019s description states.<\/p>\n

A Columbia College professor listed as a contact for the \u201cForgotten Man\u201d lecture series declined to comment to The College Fix<\/em> about the events. In addition, a campus spokeswoman said the college was unable to coordinate an interview with a member of the school\u2019s Humanities, History, and Social Sciences department, which is sponsoring the lectures.<\/p>\n
