{"id":58409,"date":"2019-05-11T10:51:06","date_gmt":"2019-05-11T14:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=58409"},"modified":"2019-05-11T17:10:07","modified_gmt":"2019-05-11T21:10:07","slug":"journalism-prof-provides-proof-of-the-bubble-in-which-media-exist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/journalism-prof-provides-proof-of-the-bubble-in-which-media-exist\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalism prof provides proof of the bubble in which media exist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/camd.northeastern.edu\/faculty\/meredith-obrien\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meredith O&#8217;Brien<\/a> is a journalism professor at Northeastern University, and go figure: She&#8217;s uncertain about how to teach her subject in the age of Trump.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent column at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/advice\/2019\/05\/10\/journalism-professor-describes-challenges-teaching-students-trump-era-opinion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Inside Higher Ed,<\/em><\/a> O&#8217;Brien, &#8220;a former newspaper and investigative reporter, award-winning columnist, and blogger,&#8221; complains<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[&#8230;] there\u2019s an unusual question my students have been asking with increasing frequency over the past two years: \u201cIs this normal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cthis\u201d refers to the interaction between President Donald Trump and the news media. Typically, I am someone who tries to keep her political opinions under wraps when standing in front of a classroom. But I answer this loaded question quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I say, \u201cthis is not normal. At. All.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ah, yes, of course: The professor is someone &#8220;who tries to keep her political opinions under wraps&#8221; &#8230; except in &#8220;emergency&#8221; cases like now.<\/p>\n<p>Because Orange Man bad.<\/p>\n<p>After all, the professor says, &#8220;the Clinton impeachment hearings, the Sept. 11 attacks, the Iraq War, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Edward Snowden&#8217;s leaks, police shootings of unarmed African Americans that spawned the Black Lives Matter movement, mass shootings and the images of Syrian refugees washing up along the shores of the Mediterranean&#8221; &#8230; all pale in comparison to covering the day-to-day happenings of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>If this nonsense isn&#8217;t enough for you, check out the prof&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/mereditheobrien.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">own blog<\/a>, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/mereditheobrien.com\/2019\/04\/02\/its-not-a-mr-smith-goes-to-washington-world-a-nations-core-values-under-attack-from-within\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the current leading post<\/a>: &#8220;A nation\u2019s core values under attack, from within&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"21ca\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Right now, I am grieving for the United States.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2f5d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">For thoughtful statesmanship and diplomacy, which are no longer important to our commander-in-chief.<\/p>\n<p id=\"451a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">For common decency in the public square, which is largely absent and is rapidly disappearing altogether, everywhere.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4517\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">For the common values of kindness that parents teach their children, as our nation\u2019s leaders have been role-modeling cruelty and avarice.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8fc9\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">For the importance of acting in an ethical manner, even when it goes against one\u2019s personal interests.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d99c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">For the respect our leaders used to show for the virtues of freedom and democracy, especially as our president embraces dictators and tyrants, and considers laws beneath him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Either the bubble in which Professor O&#8217;Brien exists is <em>very<\/em> well-insulated, or this is a case study in self-deception.<\/p>\n<p>Respect for &#8220;freedom and democracy&#8221;? Has the professor not been paying attention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/columnists\/byron-york-no-question-there-was-spying-on-trump-campaign-but-how-much\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to current events?<\/a> What about the <em>freedom<\/em> of the people to elect the leader of their choice, based on the <em>democratic<\/em> principles of government we (still) currently enjoy? This, despite the media <em>always<\/em> taking one side? For two years the administration has been tarred by a manufactured scandal, and now that it&#8217;s reached its conclusion &#8230; well, the other political party won&#8217;t allow it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-58412 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-11-at-10.57.43-AM-459x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-11-at-10.57.43-AM-459x400.png 459w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-11-at-10.57.43-AM-126x110.png 126w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-11-at-10.57.43-AM-344x300.png 344w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-11-at-10.57.43-AM.png 498w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 459px) 100vw, 459px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>(Above: Seriously, AP??<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/colorado-high-schoolers-walk-out-when-gun-controllers-politicize-vigil-for-shooting-victims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Try again<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Or, more succinctly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2019\/05\/06\/al_green_im_concerned_if_we_dont_impeach_this_president_he_will_get_re-elected.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the words<\/a> of Texas Democratic US Representative Al Green, &#8220;If we <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> impeach this president, he will get re-elected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The mainstream media trying to tear asunder the Trump administration is nothing new. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1110027367882346496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Their constant<\/a> &#8220;COLLUSION!!!&#8221; yammering to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2019\/05\/07\/tucker_calrson_democrats_pushing_russiagate_arent_crazy_theyre_covering_for_obama_on_spygate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their mocking<\/a> of the president for his (accurate) claims of being spied on are just the social media-age equivalent of their usual disdain for all things Republican and\/or conservative.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">A short two-minute video for those of you in the media pitifully insisting that no media reckoning is needed and journalists performed beautifully, soberly and responsibly throughout this whole saga: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PF5s2kTcYA\">pic.twitter.com\/PF5s2kTcYA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1110027367882346496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 25, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m old enough to remember Ted Koppel and crew openly making fun of Ronald Reagan on a &#8220;special&#8221; edition of &#8220;Nightline&#8221; regarding the president&#8217;s Strategic Defense Initiative (aka &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; program). And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/the-time-george-h-w-bush-stuck-it-to-dan-rather-on-live-television\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dan Rather berating George HW Bush<\/a> live on the air about Iran-Contra when they were supposed to be talking about 1988 campaign issues. And Rather <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/dan-rather-still-insists-his-anti-bush-memo-story-2004-was-true-jim-geraghty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pushing what proved to be a fake document<\/a> about Bush&#8217;s son George W. prior to the 2004 election (which sidelined, but not ended, the journalist&#8217;s career). Etcetera.<\/p>\n<p>I say all this as a very\u00a0<em>minor<\/em> supporter of Mr. Trump. I am no fan of his arrogance and brash demeanor &#8230; except when it comes to the media. It\u00a0is <em>rightfully deserved.<\/em> Like the Fox News Channel (at last! A news outlet that gives the conservative point of view a fair shake!) then-candidate-now-President Trump&#8217;s willingness to unabashedly battle back against media bias is something those on the right (and some in the center) have long desired.<\/p>\n<p>Folks like Meredith O&#8217;Brien don&#8217;t like it.
