{"id":73349,"date":"2020-06-18T12:34:35","date_gmt":"2020-06-18T16:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=73349"},"modified":"2020-06-18T12:34:35","modified_gmt":"2020-06-18T16:34:35","slug":"harvard-dean-announces-new-anti-racism-efforts-apologizes-for-past-failings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/harvard-dean-announces-new-anti-racism-efforts-apologizes-for-past-failings\/","title":{"rendered":"Harvard dean announces new anti-racism efforts, apologizes for past failings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The race to outdo one another in &#8220;wokeness&#8221; rocks on, this time at the Harvard Business School where its dean announced the creation of an &#8220;enduring entity&#8221; to help combat racism at the institution.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2020\/6\/17\/hbs-anti-racism-initiatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Crimson<\/a>, <\/em>Dean Nitin Nohria wrote in a Monday email that the HBS will have a &#8220;full anti-racist action plan&#8221; ready by the fall semester.<\/p>\n<p>Nohria said that &#8220;three pillars&#8221; will guide the School&#8217;s efforts: &#8220;conducting research and education on racism, supporting Black affiliates within and outside the School, and working with the broader business community on issues of racial discrimination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an email a week before that, Nohria apologized for HBS&#8217;s previous &#8220;lack of previous anti-racist work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, on behalf of the HBS community, I apologize that we have not fought racism as effectively as we could have and have not served our Black community members better,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Following that apology, HBS alumnus and lecturer Steven Rogers (<a href=\"https:\/\/marvel.fandom.com\/wiki\/Steven_Rogers_(Earth-616)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not this one<\/a>) told the business publication <a href=\"https:\/\/poetsandquants.com\/2020\/06\/15\/steven-rogers-letter-to-harvard-university-president-larry-bacow\/?pq-category=business-school-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Poets &amp; Quants<\/em><\/a> that HBS &#8220;perpetuates &#8216;systematic anti-black practices,&#8217;\u201d and that Nohria is \u201cthe leader&#8221; of those practices and is &#8220;complicit in them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rogers left HBS last year due to the &#8220;lack of diversity&#8221; and for being denied a promotion. He questioned whether Nohria and others at HBS had deemed his leadership qualifications &#8220;unimpressive&#8221; because his employees were &#8220;black working class high school graduates who were tradesmen instead of white collar college graduates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2020\/6\/17\/hbs-anti-racism-initiatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">From the story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In his email on June 15, Nohria disputed some of Rogers&#8217;s comments, though he said school leaders have since \u201creflected\u201d on them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough it&#8217;s not appropriate for me to speak publicly on confidential personnel matters, please know that I and other leaders at the School have carefully reflected on Steve&#8217;s words,\u201d Nohria wrote in his June 15 email. \u201cWe believe there are inaccuracies in the piece and are working to share data related to race more transparently.
