{"id":75609,"date":"2020-08-12T00:15:29","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T04:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=75609"},"modified":"2020-11-06T14:41:01","modified_gmt":"2020-11-06T19:41:01","slug":"uconn-to-pay-white-fragility-scholar-robin-diangelo-20000-for-antiracism-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/uconn-to-pay-white-fragility-scholar-robin-diangelo-20000-for-antiracism-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn to pay \u2018white fragility\u2019 scholar Robin DiAngelo $20,000 for antiracism workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>UPDATED<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>New course on &#8216;anti-black racism&#8217; also to be offered this fall<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The University of Connecticut is slated to pay \u201cwhite fragility\u201d scholar Robin DiAngelo $20,000 to lead a three-and-a-half-hour workshop this fall for administrators during their professional development retreat, according to a copy of the contract provided to <em>The College Fix<\/em> by the university.<\/p>\n<p>The contract also states that the public university will reimburse the diversity consultant who argues that whites are inherently racist up to $2,000 in travel expenses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSystemic oppression has been a feature of our society since the first Europeans arrived on this continent, and this colonial legacy won\u2019t disappear overnight,\u201d stated President Thomas Katsouleas, Provost Carl Lejuez, and Chief Diversity Officer Frank Tuitt as they recently <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/07\/uconn-update-diversity-equity-inclusion-initiatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> DiAngelo\u2019s upcoming talk as part of a suite of racial justice initiatives to be launched at the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are committing ourselves to the hard work of listening, understanding, and working to make the changes needed to build the kind of society where the promises of equity and justice so foundational to our nation are finally shared by all,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>The contract stipulates that DiAngelo \u201cdoes not consent to having her presentation filmed, whether for archival purposes or later broadcast,\u201d but it does allow for an unrecorded live-streaming to accommodate larger audiences.<\/p>\n<p>She also bills phone calls related to her services as $320 per hour, the contract states.<\/p>\n<p>DiAngelo is the author of \u201cWhite Fragility: Why It&#8217;s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism,\u201d which argues that \u201cwhite fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence,\u201d its online description <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/White-Fragility-People-About-Racism\/dp\/0807047414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DiAngelo, whose popularity has soared in recent years, has made controversial suggestions at some of her campus appearances. At the University of Texas in 2017, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/white-inventor-white-fragility-tells-university-texas-whites-must-stop-becoming-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told students<\/a> that too many white people are teachers. In 2019, the University of Kentucky <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/07\/28\/white-liberals-profit-privilege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paid her<\/a> $12,000 for a two-hour \u201cracial justice\u201d session.<\/p>\n<p>Hosting DiAngelo at the fall leadership retreat is part of the University of Connecticut\u2019s plans to increase its social justice efforts this fall.<\/p>\n<p>Its new \u201cDiversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives\u201d were <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/07\/uconn-update-diversity-equity-inclusion-initiatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> in a July news release that noted the retreat \u201cwill help University leadership come to grips with the critical questions of racism and inclusion, and to bring those insights back to our campuses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of that plan also includes a new course on \u201canti-black racism\u201d to be offered this fall.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"H3O9tu75qv\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/uconn-student-government-leaders-resign-because-theyre-white\/\">UConn student government leaders resign because they&#8217;re white<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute;
