{"id":75801,"date":"2020-08-17T15:13:44","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T19:13:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=75801"},"modified":"2020-08-17T15:13:44","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T19:13:44","slug":"uc-berkeley-decolonization-column-argues-in-favor-of-violent-resistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/uc-berkeley-decolonization-column-argues-in-favor-of-violent-resistance\/","title":{"rendered":"UC Berkeley &#8216;decolonization&#8217; column argues in favor of \u2018violent resistance\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>\u2018There is no \u2018civil\u2019 way to resist ongoing occupation and war,\u2019 writes paper\u2019s decolonization columnist<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A student columnist for the <em>Daily Cal<\/em>, the student paper at UC Berkeley, recently argued that social justice movements are too focused on peace and \u201cviolent resistance\u201d can be an effective tool for the \u201coppressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pacifist students \u201clove pictures of children handing roses or playing music to armed soldiers, who also happen to be wrecking their homes. They love quoting Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. about peaceful protest and resistance,\u201d Khaled Alqahtani wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/2020\/08\/12\/this-war-cant-be-civil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 12 column<\/a>. He \u201cwrites the Wednesday column on decolonization\u201d according to his bio for the <em>Daily Cal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>These types of people \u201cclaim that \u2018radical love\u2019 will (magically) dismantle entrenched systems of oppression,\u201d Alqahtani said. But this is not the best approach, he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Radical love\u2019 my ass. It disgusts me that the oppressors\u2019 emotions and well-being (in all contexts, from institutions to individuals) are the first to be considered and accommodated whenever people question the validity of armed or violent resistance,\u201d the student wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The headline of his column is: \u201cThis war can\u2019t be civil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Alqahtani stated he is not dismissing the benefits of peaceful action and resistance, he suggests it might not be enough:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You may want to lead a silent march instead of setting a police station on fire. Sometimes, that may work best. What I\u2019m criticizing is the constant rejection of violent resistance on grounds of respectability. There is no socially \u2018acceptable\u2019 way to protest the murder of women and trans and queer people around me every single day. There is no \u2018civil\u2019 way to resist ongoing occupation and war.
