Greg Pingree was an adjunct professor at the University of Florida teaching a class called “Law, Religion, and Sexual Identity” when a student asked him a provocative question.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t transphobic to think trans women are not women, right?\u201d the student allegedly asked Pingree during a private Zoom conversation in April.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not transphobic, it\u2019s just your view, and I welcome you to express that in my class,\u201d Pingree allegedly responded.<\/p>\n

Pingree then sent a copy of the discussion to the whole class, according to a bias complaint filed with the University of Florida\u2019s RESPECT Team<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cProfessor Pingree claims the recording and delivery was an accident and has since removed it, but it was very upsetting to hear a UF Law professor defending and encouraging discriminatory and hateful anti-transgender remarks,\u201d wrote the student who reported the professor.<\/p>\n

Pingree did not respond to multiple requests by The College Fix<\/em> to comment for this story.<\/p>\n

The incident was one of 18 reports filed since 2019 with the RESPECT Team, which serves as the school\u2019s bias and hate crime reporting system.<\/p>\n

The College Fix<\/em> recently obtained copies of the reports through an open records law request. In many cases, the names of both the individuals filing the reports and those targeted by the reports have been redacted to protect their identities.<\/p>\n

The reports were obtained as The Fix<\/em> continues to investigate the types of complaints that are lodged through bias response teams at college campuses across the nation. Nearly two dozen<\/a> universities have been included in the investigation so far since it launched in 2019.<\/p>\n

That year, The College Fix<\/em> profiled UF<\/a>, whose cases at the time included reports filed against a grumpy professor, a racist Snapchat from someone unaffiliated with the school, and a student who said they were kept out of a fraternity because they wore socks touting a political candidate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe purpose of the RESPECT Team is to provide impacted parties of bias incidents opportunities to be heard and supported; understand and respond to situations that affect the University of Florida; educate and inform the community; and create awareness of ignorance and intolerance,\u201d said UF Issues Management & Crisis Communications Director Hessy Fernandez in an email to The College Fix.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe RESPECT Team provides services to witnesses, bystanders, targeted individuals, offenders, or members of the community. The RESPECT Team does not investigate, adjudicate or take the place of other UF processes or services. Rather, the RESPECT team complements and works with campus entities to connect impacted parties and communities with appropriate support and resources,\u201d Fernandez said.<\/p>\n

In the reports filed since 2019, sexual identity was also an issue at UF when the school\u2019s Counseling and Wellness Center contracted for a mental health story hour with local drag queen Sandi Perls (pictured).<\/p>\n

\"\"According to a bias report filed by UF Assistant Director of Residence Life and Education Jason Fraser-Nash, there was \u201cchatter\u201d on Facebook regarding Perls\u2019 agreement with the school.<\/p>\n

But Fraser-Nash told The College Fix<\/em> he didn\u2019t have any information about what specifically was said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did my due diligence and submitted the report based on the information I received,\u201d Fraser-Nash said in an email to The College Fix<\/em>. \u201cThere was not enough available information for any additional follow-up.\u201d<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t the first event Perls had participated in with the school. In February, Perls filmed a one-hour interview<\/a> with the Counseling and Wellness Center called \u201cBeing Fabulous with Sandi Perls.\u201d The YouTube video has been viewed 51 times.<\/p>\n

Another report was filed against Dana Lynn Myers, an undergraduate advisor in the school\u2019s art department. In a jumbled diatribe, a student accused Myers of \u201cableism\u201d for \u201cbasically outlining every way shape and form she categorically rejects student\u2019s [sic] literal basic human decency in a way that made me feel like an animal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The student also said they reported Myers to the campus police department and the CWC. The school did not contact Myers after the complaint was filed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Respect Team followed its process,\u201d Fernandez said about the Myers report.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt reached out to the reporting party and offered support and resources. After communicating with the reporting party, there was no need to reach out to the person about whom the report was submitted, because the reporting party stated that they wanted assistance withdrawing from the class and were going to work to restore their relationship with their academic unit,\u201d Fernandez said.<\/p>\n

Other incidents included:<\/p>\n

-During a Zoom meeting hosted by the Counseling and Wellness Center and the campus LGBTQ+ Affairs Office in December of last year, an individual going by the name \u201cJahseh O\u201d jumped in and began saying things like \u201cEpstein didn\u2019t kill himself\u201d and \u201ccells interlinked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThough the content of the Zoombombing appeared not to be LGBTQ specific…the person\u2019s actions were intended to disrupt LGBT related research,\u201d the complainant wrote.<\/p>\n

-Also in December, a white female student posted two TikToks of herself dancing and lip-synching to rap lyrics that contained the \u201cn-word.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease address this ASAP,\u201d wrote the complaining student. \u201cShe clearly does not care about saying this word which is really concerning and outright racist…she must face consequences as this word isn\u2019t to be used by a non-black person.\u201d<\/p>\n

-At a party in April this year, a female student \u201cused and repeated\u201d the \u201cf-word\u201d to refer to gay men, while gay men were present.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has merely offered apologies without remorse,\u201d the complaining student wrote. \u201cI would like action to be taken in the form of a required Bias workshop with the MCDA (Multicultural & Diversity Affairs) or a productive conversation with a staff member that can serve as an equivalent.\u201d<\/p>\n
