{"id":96887,"date":"2021-10-13T00:01:55","date_gmt":"2021-10-13T04:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=96887"},"modified":"2021-10-13T01:52:28","modified_gmt":"2021-10-13T05:52:28","slug":"umich-hiring-three-racial-justice-technology-professors-to-battle-the-new-jim-code","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/umich-hiring-three-racial-justice-technology-professors-to-battle-the-new-jim-code\/","title":{"rendered":"UMich hiring three \u2018Racial Justice &#038; Technology\u2019 professors to battle \u2018the new jim code\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>&#8216;Data and algorithms are frequently biased&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As part of an \u201cAnti-Racism Faculty Hiring Initiative\u201d underway at the University of Michigan, the school has announced it will soon hire three \u201cProfessorships in Racial Justice &amp; Technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scholars will battle what the job description calls \u201cthe new jim code,\u201d an apparent play on words referencing the Jim Crow racial segregation laws from over a half-century ago.<\/p>\n<p>The job description argues that emerging artificial intelligence, facial recognition cameras and various algorithms that claim to be unbiased are anything but.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]here is growing concern that they reproduce and accelerate racist exclusions, violence, and exploitation via what is variously referred to as \u2018surveillance capitalism,\u2019 \u2018algorithmic inequality,\u2019 and \u2018the new jim code,\u2019\u201d it <a href=\"https:\/\/esc.umich.edu\/profs-in-racial-justice-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData and algorithms are frequently biased, subject to the same structural racism as our social institutions. \u2026 The data that informs so-called \u2018predictive policing\u2019 is based on racist assumptions about criminality and a legacy of over-policing communities of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Qualifications sought for the candidates include degrees that entail the intersection of critical race theory into academic disciplines that include technology policy, design and big data studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacial recognition technologies are trained on images of white men,\u201d the job description explains.<\/p>\n<p>Scholars have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/colleges-deny-using-facial-recognition-technology-after-high-profile-academics-shame-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publicly criticized<\/a> facial recognition technology in the past, calling it racist.<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> reached out to a University of Michigan spokesperson for an update on the hiring process and to ask how many professors have been hired as a part of the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cU-M does not provide public updates related to candidates and the hiring process for individual faculty positions,\u201d university spokesperson Rick Fitzgerald told <em>The College Fix.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fitzgerald reiterated that \u201cThe Anti-Racism Hiring Initiative is a three-year initiative aimed at enhancing the university\u2019s capacity to develop cutting-edge scholarship focused on dismantling systemic racism. The positions are tenure-track faculty positions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The initiative \u201cwill ultimately add at least 20 new tenured or tenure-track faculty members with scholarly expertise in racial inequality and structural racism to schools and colleges across campus,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/anti-racism-faculty-hiring-moves-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> from <em>The University Record<\/em>, a UMich administration-ran publication that provides news to faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Record<\/em> post was published in March of this year. Now job postings are beginning to roll out.<\/p>\n<p>The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy <a href=\"https:\/\/apply.interfolio.com\/86532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sought<\/a> a professor of &#8220;Racial Justice in Science and Technology Policy&#8221; in early spring, with a start date of September 1, according to the application portal.<\/p>\n<p>Fitzgerald would not comment on the status of the specific opening.<\/p>\n<p>Those applying for the racial justice and technology spot were told:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cApplicants should have expertise focused on structural and other forms of racism in science, technology, and associated policies, and interest in how the tools of public policy and democracy can be used to create racially just and equitable science and technology and\/or how science and technology can be wielded to address structural racism.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design is also headhunting for a professor in \u201cAnti-Racism in Design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Stamps <a href=\"https:\/\/stamps.umich.edu\/jobs\/tenure-track-faculty-position\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">job description<\/a> is as follows: \u201cTheir work may include anti-racism in ana\u00adlytic frame\u00adworks, design meth\u00adods, fab\u00adri\u00adca\u00adtion tech\u00adniques, human-tech\u00adnol\u00adogy inter\u00adac\u00adtions, and other cre\u00adative research and teach\u00ading that pos\u00adi\u00adtively impacts racial jus\u00adtice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the University of Michigan School of Information seeks the right candidate for its \u201cAnti-Racist Data Justice Faculty Position,\u201d according to the post.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cdata justice\u201d entails a number of things.
